Guillaume Quintard 72016480cf scrub varnish 4/5 references 
Varnish 6.0 is half a decade old. 4.x and 5.x have been EOL'd years ago
and there shouldn't be any more distribution carrying those, there's no
good reason to keep them around

Additionally to PR https://github.com/magento/magento2/pull/7650, when Varnish cache sits behind an NGINX proxy, HTTP code 499 is returned unless socket stream waits for response (which should not have much of a performance impact due to nature of PURGE request)
